Why your hair sticks out on the sides after a haircut

Structure Men's Studio · West Brickell, Miami

If your sides lift a week after every cut, the fix is technique — not more product.

It's not your hair. It's the cut.

Thick, straight and dense hair has a natural tendency to push outward. When a barber takes the sides down too short too quickly — or removes bulk with clippers instead of controlling weight — the hair loses the length it needs to lie flat and starts standing up as it grows.

What actually keeps it down

Weight, placed correctly. At Structure, Alex reads your density and growth pattern first, then removes weight with scissors so the hair sits down and keeps its movement. A soft taper handles the sides without exposing too much skin, so there's no harsh line to grow out.

Miami humidity

Humidity makes dense hair expand even more. The answer isn't a tighter fade — it's a shape that already accounts for how your hair behaves, plus the right drying and product routine, which Alex walks you through after the cut.

Book the right cut

For thick straight hair we usually start with the Guided Haircut ($75) so Alex can map your growth before cutting. Private studio in West Brickell, steps from Maizon Brickell — by appointment only.
